On the day of the last full moon I was thinking about the cosmological movement of Venus as she was making her transit across the sun. This event is something that happens only once in one hundred years or so. I’m thinking it means something very special to you and I, her transit. I read an interpretation of the phenomenon that explained Venus represents the love of the Divine Feminine while the Sun represents the nourishing light and energy of the Divine Masculine. In my own words, the transit represents a cosmic union of love and light, the joining of masculine and feminine energy, which reminds us all that the reemergence of the Divine Feminine is upon us.
What is the Divine Feminine?
My husband has often asked me why I felt it important to declare the mother side of God or Mother Goddess. I explained to him that just as melanated people (my alternative to Black and people of color) of the planet must identify themselves within an oppressive system perpetuated by so-called white supremacy, women and those who love us and life, must do the same. We live in a time of excessive masculine domination also known as patriarchy, which is based and headed by a Godhead that is, well, male.
Whether you subscribe to religious doctrine or not, these words and the Divine Feminine are universally appropriate. While I personally agree with the idea that the source of creation and all things in existence is too great a force to be personified, the acknowledgement of the female principle and feminine face of the divine is necessary as a result of the existence of religion. Western societies in particular are held by Christianity and its Holy Trinity, the father, son, and the holy spirit. According to this dogma the woman, mother and wife to God has no place in divinity.
Yes, in some cultures the Virgin Mary is worshiped as the mother of God, but in my opinion she isn’t the image of real women. She didn’t even have sex to conceive Jesus after all. Notice great, noble women in the Bible like Mary and Ruth are obedient. The ones who challenge and rebel are supposed whores and temptresses. This is a direct reflection of how the Christian world as well as its other two Abrahamic relatives, Judaism and Islam, view women on the planet – subservient to the male principle.
The female principle and/or face of God is the Divine Feminine. She is Goddess, high priestess of life for life cannot happen unless it is nurtured in her womb and delivered out of her vagina. There is nothing subservient about her or her daughters. The Divine Feminine reminds us of the magic of life, of creativity, beauty, nature, divine law or the natural order of things, and the power of staying true to self.
Patriarchy has given us its laws and rules that we’ve agreed to abide by in the name of hmm, I don’t know, fear, maybe? We’ve ditched our commitment to ourselves to be free, liberated, creative beings and traded all that in for a false sense of security and safety. The Divine Feminine reminds us that fear is only an illusion and that there is nothing more powerful than living your truth and speaking from your heart. I am not speaking of a women’s liberation movement or political agenda. I am speaking of an inevitable paradigm shift. The Divine Feminine represents an awakening of the heart. It affects every soul, not just women. This awakening is also about the liberation of men and their connection to the feminine.
I wondered for many years where the mother side of God was. What I discovered is that she is here, always has been and always will be. In the words of tantric healer Shantam Nityama, Mother (meaning all women) “has been asleep at the wheel.” We’ve allowed our sons, husbands, fathers, and all their cousins to run the show for the last several thousand years. This is the reason for the focus on religion instead of spirituality, making money instead of the development of creativity and life purpose, wars, gross amounts of blood shed, disease, disregard and lack of reverence for nature, etc. We’ve been in concert with them, you and I; women are also to blame, which is fine for it has all served a purpose. It is what it is.
I now invite you to research the historical context of the suppression of the Divine Feminine for yourself. Adam’s first wife, Lilith (not Eve), The Inquisition, and the witch hunts should prove to be a great start. We are all now summoned to wake up! Be blessed.
